MicroVision meets R2D2 and more important items +2

MicroVision demonstrated a lot of technologies at CES, but the R2D2 remote controlled fridge is too funny not to headline with.  This earlier video gives the best feel for the integrated projector that I've seen, and MicroVision has now confirmed that it supplies the projector, at least indirectly.  As with the RoBoHon, it seems more like a gimmick than a functional addition, even to a toy, but if ya gotta have the best toys...

Until we get definitive word on new contracts, I'm going to suppose that items like this and the Qualpers phone, use Sony's MPCL1 module.  If so, tracking shipments to Sony will be the best way to assess the impact of these new products.

Consequently, MicroVision's work on HUDs and scanning applications, remain of more interest to me, and details are scarce there.  It's good to see a demo, and ongoing work, though.  That's also not so say that projectors aren't important; they are, and hopefully they will continue to improve via the use of new laser modules like Sumitomo's.  The tricky part here is that I've yet to see any compelling evidence that MicroVision would have a lock on development of such new applications, like Universal Display does for phosphorescent emitters.  Hopefully more information will be available in the next earnings report, due in early March.
