Lenovo uses smaller STMicro module, not Microvision -4

In this post, Karl Guttag surmises that Lenovo's SmartCast demonstration used an LBS (laser beam scanning) module from STMicro, rather than one from Microvision, as I had hoped.  Furthermore, the STMicro solution is approximately one fifth the size of Microvision's PicoP module, though brightness may not measure up.  In light of this, it will be very interesting to hear further commentary from Microvision management about the second half mobile product rollout they were (are?) expecting from an unnamed partner (not Sony).

Guttag has been pretty unimpressed with Cellulon projectors, which use Microvision technology, though I don't think he is always particularly fair in comparing a developing technology to more mature ones.  I do think his reservations about the limitations of using any LBS technology in mobile devices are well-founded, though.  I see many other potential applications, such as in car windshields and other heads-up displays.

All in all, this seems a negative for MVIS, but not disaster.  I take it as one more twist in the roller-coaster ride that is common with pretty much all developing technologies.
